Did You Know that Inflammation is Present in All Diseases?
Did you know that EVERY chronic disease is an inflammatory disease? Yes, cancer is inflammatory and so is a cold! By learning how to prevent inflammation, you can reverse disease, reduce your biological age and slow aging and not to mention live a healthy and more fulfilling life. So don’t think inflammation is no big deal as I think many people do…it’s a killer when out of control.
Most people from all over the planet and from all walks of life suffer from chronic inflammation caused by a plethora of factors that degrade our health and reduce our longevity. The resulting inflammatory cascade produces diseases such as allergies, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, colitis, diabetes, heart disease, infections, osteoporosis, and tendonitis to name a handful and there are many more. This epidemic sweeps through all age groups.
Don’t get me wrong, we need inflammation at the right time such as when we have an injury. In this case, the body starts an inflammatory response to deal with bacteria and other harmful microorganisms and is a normal process that must take place to heal. However, when chronic, it creates a downward spiral into disease. Chronic inflammation produces an overwhelming supply of free radicals that destroy our defenses and damage our DNA. This causes aging and the development of diseases of all kinds.
So how does inflammation start? There is not just one reason for chronic inflammation, however, our diet is the number one reason. The typical diet is high in refined carbohydrates such as white flour, sugar and other high glycemic carbs that are low in nutrients. Sugar and white flour increase blood sugar, and even a small increase in blood sugar generates pro-inflammatory chemicals. Also, sugar and white flour produce inflammation thus disease by forming AGEs . Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are proteins or lipids that become glycated as a result of exposure to sugars. They can be a factor in aging and in the development or worsening of many degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. AGEs affect nearly every type of cell and molecule in the body and are thought to be one factor in aging and some age-related chronic diseases. They are also believed to play a causative role in the vascular complications of diabetes mellitus. Next the body tries to protect you by breaking these AGEs apart so then immune cells secrete large amounts of inflammatory chemicals. It depends on where the AGEs occur as to what disease may appear.
Some researchers believe over-acidity to be another major problem causing chronic inflammation. Most westerners eat an acidic diet caused by too much salt, sugar, white flour, dairy, meat and soda drinks.
Fats and oils in the western diet are inflammatory because they contain a high amount of omega-6 fatty acids which are pro-inflammatory, while omega-3s are anti-inflammatory. In the past we consumed more equal amounts of these oils, thus achieving a balance. Now we consume 20 to 30 times more omega-6 than omega-3. Our food industry today most often uses cheaper pro-inflammatory oils (Omega 6), including corn, safflower, sunflower, soy, canola, and peanut oils. Grain-fed beef, poultry, and farmed fish also contain excessive omega-6. These imbalances produce a massive excess of pro-inflammatory chemicals in our diet. It is immensely important that only healthy fish (no farmed fish), meats (organic grass fed), fats and oils be eaten (olive, grapeseed, avocado, palm, coconut, ghee/clarified butter, lard).
Milk products are also a cause of inflammation. Dairy cows today eat a diet containing grain therefore producing excessive omega-6 fats, creating a pro-inflammatory imbalance. Also, approximately 50% of our population is unknowingly allergic to dairy. These allergic reactions create chronic inflammation.
Hydrogenated oils, which are in so many food products such as candy, baking, margarine, breakfast cereals and peanut butter are also pro-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation results because the trans fatty acids contained in hydrogenated oils inhibit the activity of enzymes that make anti-inflammatory compounds, but not those that create pro-inflammatory ones.
Infections are also a contributing factor to inflammation. If your immunity is strong, you can minimize the amount of infections you will suffer. Infections set off strong inflammatory processes to destroy invading microorganisms. Unfortunately, the inflammation damages your body, as well as the invading microorganisms. Having repeated colds will do a great deal of damage and reduce your life span.
Physical injuries also naturally create inflammation. After healing, inflammation should subside but because of pro-inflammatory diets, injuries frequently don’t fully heal and many times results in chronic low-grade inflammation in the injured tissue.
Another cause of inflammatory responses are allergies and food sensitivities. Chronic inflammation is created by chronic allergic reactions. By strengthening the immune system and avoiding allergens like wheat and dairy, allergic reactions can be minimized. Allergies have become epidemic partially by the extreme over use of antibiotics, NSAIDS(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), and hormones by the medical establishment.
These drugs damage gut tissue, causing leakage (dysbiosis or leaky gut syndrome) of undigested food molecules into the blood, thereby promoting food allergies. It is a good idea for most people to avoid the most common allergens such as dairy and wheat. As mentioned, half the population may be allergic to the casein found in milk as well as the gluten found in wheat, rye, and barley.
Another cause of chronic systemic inflammation is fat cells. With so many westerners too heavy, you can see that the result is chronic inflammatory response. Hence, overweight people suffer so much more disease and disability.
Yet another player in the cause of inflammation is environmental toxins. Some of these toxins are in the form of synthetic fibers, latex, glues, adhesives, plastics, air fresheners, cleaning products and perfume. Even low exposure can drive your immune system into a frenzy, resulting in inflammatory autoimmune diseases.
Chronic inflammation can also be produced by long term stress due to the hormones that are released. Stress produces inflammatory chemicals that can cause skin conditions or intestinal difficulties. Also, insomnia can cause inflammation. Sleep deprived people have higher levels of inflammatory chemicals.
All disease has inflammation as a common denominator. By allowing ourselves to be exposed to the elements we have discussed, we are aging ourselves prematurely and suffering from all kinds of disease. We must learn to control inflammation in order to reverse it. It is possible with some effort.
In order to achieve the goal of decreasing inflammation, consume a diet high in a variety of fresh, organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Lose the excess weight and take high quality anti-inflammatory supplements. Supplement with antioxidant nutrients: omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, B complex (including folic acid, B6 and B12), C, D, and E, plus beta-carotene, CoQ10, curcumin, quercitin, selenium, N-acetylcysteine, and alpha-lipoic acid.
My picks from Biotics Research are Bio AE Mulsion, Bio ADEK Mulsion, Bio D Mulsion Forte, Biomega3 Liquid, Bio Protect and Bio Protect Plus. However, if you have gut issues, that’s something that must be addressed in order to stop inflammation. Here’s an Infection-Infestation-Endocrine Questionnaire so we can find out if your gut is overloaded with candida, bacteria or even parasites. If so, they must be eliminated and then the gut healing and sealing must be done. Please read these two blogs about Leaky gut and the second blog link about gut issues and how they affect the endocrine system. Fix your gut, fix your inflammation and avoid auto-immune diseases. Keep in mind that these diseases require potent damaging drugs to manage and these take their toll on your immune system as well as other aspects of your overall health. It’s your life. Take control over its quality. Book a scan and get your health back.
